sulfuric
acid is one of the most widely
utilized acids in the world spanning
industries from agriculture to paint and varnish coatings. Sulfuric acid, in its present form, is extremely difficult to handle because of its caustic characteristic (ability to burn human tissue). Until
Sulfuric acid is diluted to less than a 10% solution, it will burn human and animal tissue.
When water and sulfuric
acid are mixed together, the
water will
completely dissociate the
acid causing an
exothermic reaction which is what causes the burning of human tissue. In lay person terms, the hydrogen and
sulfur will separate. This creates a volatile
environment with significant temperatures.
Cheltec has
developed a proprietary process that prevents this
complete dissociation
and results in a safe
sulfuric acid product
STABITROL™ (Stay-ba-trol)
that will not burn
human and animal tissue, even when mixing with water.
Currently, the most popular method to reduce the
“bite” in sulfuric acid is
through dilution and/or additives such as various salt
compounds. Though this may reduce some of the concerns
with burning human tissue, many of these products become
volatile when mixed with water, therefore; burning is a
concern. In addition, the current method to produce a
slightly safer acid does not enhance the benefits of the
acid itself.
Through Cheltec’s
proprietary process, a 93%
standard sulfuric acid is reacted, which produces our
super-acid,
STABITROL™,
which is equivalent to a 50% concentration
sulfuric acid. However; this 50%
STABITROL™
concentration is stronger than a
50% standard sulfuric
acid concentration because Cheltec’s process
significantly enhances the beneficial properties of the
sulfuric acid.
One of these
enhanced properties is the chelation (key-lay-shun)
property. Chelation is a method in-which metal ions
such as copper, iron, or zinc, are held or suspended in
a liquid.
STABITROL™
can, in many cases, replace traditional chelation
chemicals and/or agents, which are used in many industries such as the aquatic industry for algae
control, and the agricultural market for liquid
micro-nutrients or fertilizers. While traditional chelation agents work well in high pH environments, they
are neutralized in acidic environments.
STABITROL™ works
well in low and moderately high pH ranges. Also, these
traditional chelation chemicals tend to be weak in
holding strength and are expensive. Cheltec’s
chelation product,
STABITROL™,
is magnum strength chelate
and is cost competitive.
Field trials were
conducted with the
STABITROL™
technology for chelation efficacy in industries such as
algae control, agricultural fertilizer, binding hard
water ions for herbicide enhancement, and odor control. Cheltec sought individuals with an expertise in these
fields to evaluate the product’s performance and
uniqueness. Most of those who participated in these
trials and demonstrations are now customers.
